Baylor University Tennis Complex & The Hurd Tennis Center
Waco, Texas

In over 70 years of competition in the former Southwest Conference, Baylor had never won a conference men’s tennis title. In the late 1990’s, BU made a commitment to men’s and women’s tennis at BU to improve their programs and tennis facilities. BU hired Tennis Planning Consultants, Inc. (TPC) to decide on a suitable new tennis facility location and to design that facility. The combined result was the new Baylor Tennis Complex completed in 2003. The next year, 2004, Baylor not only won the Big 12 Conference Men’s Tennis title, they won the men’s NCAA championships defeating UCLA in the finals.  As of 2012, Baylor has won ten Big 12 Conference Men’s tennis titles and eight women’s Big 12 tennis team championships.

The $2.8 million complex includes 6 oversized, recessed collegiate tennis courts, 3 recessed standard tennis courts, a clubhouse with coaches offices, weight rooms, etc., and tennis stadium seating for 1,200 spectators.

The following are "Big 12" Coaches’ comments about the Baylor Tennis Complex:

“It’s amazing. It’s a great complex to see for all of tennis. We’re quite jealous.”

Kilmeny Waterman,  Kansas women’s head coach

“The facility is awesome. It ranks with the best in the country.”

Steve Bietau, Kansas State women’s head coach

“The new facility here is beautiful, everybody loves it. Baylor is very lucky.”

Blake Starkey, Missouri women’s head coach

“This facility is absolutely beautiful. It was done in a first-class way—it is the best in the nation—hopefully other schools will look at this facility and take note of what can be done.”

Paul Lockwood, Oklahoma men’s head coach
